Communication Management

Communication with a Focus on Sustainability and Digitalization

2023 saw a strong focus on sustainability. As part of the pratical project with Amundi, students designed trendy campaigns around the topic of “sustainable investing”. On behalf of the Sustainable Finance start-up birds of trust and our university they designed awareness campaigns for more sustainability in everyday life. Our students also impressed the traditional spice brand KOTÁNYI with the contemporary campaigns they developed for the company as part of their practical project which focused on authentic high-quality communication.

In June we hosted students from The Hague University of Applied Sciences at the final event of the joint COIL project. Prior to this, the guests had worked together in virtual teams with students from our Bachelor’s program developing ideas along the value chain to enhance sustainability aspects in restaurants.

For the case study on the Greenpeace campaign to ban private jets Head of Bachelor’s Program David Dobrowsky and Birgit Schaller from the Competence Center for Markeing created up-to-date content for use in teaching. International Course Manager Leyla Tavernaro-Haidarian explored cultural understanding and a human-centered approach in sustainability communication at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in Madrid.

Work in the area of research focused mainly on aspects of digitalization. At the Business & Entrepreneurial Economics (BEE) Conference in June, David Dobrowsky presented the results of a study on the impact of emotionalized language on the perceived credibility of chatbots. In his talk at the ISA World Congress of Sociology in Melbourne, Australia, Senior Researcher Marian Adolf addressed the disinformation crisis driven by digitalization and social media.

Finally, two Master’s theses on PR, internal communication and artificial intelligence took home the first and second prizes at the Franz Bogner Science Awards for PR while two alumni and a student were selected as Top PR talents under 30.

Digital Economy

Brisk Expansion Continues

Developing the Team. We work as a personally and professionally diverse team of eleven, supported by a growing number of external teaching staff from the business world and international partner universities. Almost all members of staff possess both technical and business expertise.

Study Programs. We see the Bachelor’s program in Digital Business as the “Swiss army knife” for the digitalization of the economy as students acquire skills in four areas: The basics of digital technology, business informatics, management and communication. Around 55 students can be accepted on the program each year, 40 to 45 percent of whom are women. As the program is aimed at working students, 60 percent of teaching takes place online, around 40 percent takes place in face-to-face classes at the weekend. During the semester, students meet every other Friday afternoon and Saturday at the FHWien der WKW campus.

Institute for Digital Transformation and Strategy (IDS). The Department of Digital Economy comprises two closely integrated teams, that of the study programs and that of the Institute for Digital Transformation and Strategy (IDS), where research and development activities in two areas of work are concentrated: firstly, on the use of digital technology with a current focus on Internet-of-Things solutions in the context of logistics and secondly, on strategic management in the context of digital transformation with a current focus on design options for established small and medium-sized enterprises.

FH-Prof. Dr. Dr. Sebastian Eschenbach
Head of Department
Department of Digital Economy

Digital technology has become an indispensable part of our lives. With technical know-how combined with entrepreneurial thinking and communication and marketing skills, you’ll be prepared to take on a leading role in the world of business. Digital Business is the cross-disciplinary study program of the future!

Financial Management

Well Prepared for Careers in Financial Management

In 2023, digitalization remained a key focus area of the Financial Management study programs as nowadays it plays an important role in finance, accounting and taxation as well as in financial management and controlling. Our science-based academic program that nevertheless has a strong practical focus systematically integrates this development into our teaching and thus provides ideal preparation for a successful career in financial management.

The internationalization of our teaching activities also continued to be an important area of work, with students reaping the benefits in courses such as “Special Issues in International Accounting” and “Economics”.

In the area of project management and corporate projects existing partnerships were continued, and new and exciting projects added in the field of tax law in cooperation with an international consulting firm and in the field of accounting in cooperation with a real estate company.

Teaching activities saw an increase in the proportion of online teaching and thus a didactically sensible balance of classroom teaching and distance learning. Here, increased use was made of modern didactic tools.

In addition, implementation of the revised curricula for the Bachelor’s program in Finance, Accounting & Taxation and the Master’s program in Financial Management & Controlling commenced in the 2023/24 winter semester.

Dr. Thomas Kaufmann-Lerchl
Head of Financial Management Study Programs

As alumni we both feel a special sense of attachment to the Bachelor’s program in Finance, Accounting & Taxation.

The combination of theoretical instruction and a strong practical focus is unique as it offers students valuable continuous exchange with lecturers from professional practice while ensuring that cutting-edge topics are always covered.

Accounting, national and international reporting, taxation and controlling provide a solid foundation of cross-cutting expertise that will get students off to a flying start in the world of finance. Furthermore, a great deal of importance is placed on students’ personal development. We at KPMG are proud to contribute to the development and education of young talents at FHWien der WKW!

Human Resources & Organization

A Busy Year Full of New Beginnings and HR Events

The focus in 2023 was on implementing the new curricula for the Bachelor’s program in Human Resources Management and the Master’s program in Organizational & Human Resources Development for the first time. In September, approximately 120 first-semester students began their study program using the new curricula. Topics such as digitalization in personnel management, occupational health management, sustainability and self-organization in a corporate setting are now much more firmly embedded in the content of many courses. Another premiere was the launch of the new compact training course HR in Tourism, which has been successfully transferring HR expertise to the tourism industry since June 2023.

The entire team of the study programs and several of our best students successfully organized and implemented HR events or enriched them with various lectures in the reporting year. In June we held a very successful evening dedicated to the memory of Edgar Schein entitled “Leadership & Culture” which included a video link to California so that his son Peter Schein could also participate. In September, Steffi Bärmann led a workshop on “Trust in AI” at the now renowned HR Inside Summit at the Hofburg in Vienna, where a number of our Master’s students also presented the findings from their theses and explained their relevance for real-world HR.

We were delighted that so many graduates attended our Alumni Afternoon in October. Approximately 100 graduates accepted our invitation to the event on the theme of “HRO yesterday, today, the day after tomorrow”. Whether they graduated several months or several years ago, entering the building and seeing their colleagues again brought back nostalgic memories.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the team of the study programs, the external lecturers, our students and all cooperation partners for helping to make 2023 such a successful year!

Focus on Employees: The World of Benefits is Becoming More Personalized

Inflation and the shortage of skilled workers have the labor market firmly in their grip. In this difficult situation, tax-free benefits play an increasingly important role – on the one hand to enable companies to position themselves as attractive employers and retain qualified employees, and on the other to help workers cover the rising cost of living. However, not all companies are aware of this lever and its far-reaching benefits. In addition, there are vast differences in how such instruments are used. In some companies, for example, there is already a trend towards taking employees’ individual needs into account and offering them “personalized” benefits.

This is shown by the revealing results of our practical projects with students from the Bachelor’s program in Human Resources Management, who conducted interviews with human resources managers and worker representatives from Austrian companies on the importance and use of benefits. I would like to thank you all for your efforts! My team and I really enjoyed our collaboration.

Journalism & Media Management

Digitalization, Internationalization, Sustainability

In 2023 digitalization, internationalization and sustainability played a central role at the Journalism & Media Management study programs, running like a red thread through all the programs’ activities.

International projects, which in recent years had been delayed by the war in Ukraine and the pandemic, also gained new momentum. More students than ever before wanted to participate in an international mobility program and demand for these rose sharply.

International Networking

A series of international networking projects kicked off in February with the eighth International School of Multimedia Journalism, which this year focused on climate journalism. Thanks to support from the OeAD Cooperation Office Lviv the second, and final, project week was held in Wroclaw in Poland in July. In April, students collaborated with “Der Standard” newspaper to cover the International Journalism Festival in Perugia and in summer the international radio event “Europe on Air“ on “Aspects of Segregation” took place in Helsinki.

The highlight of our international activities was the Annual General Meeting of the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) which was held at FHWien der WKW. Two of the main topics of discussion were data journalism and the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism. The question of what AI skills future graduates will be expected to have and how this will affect journalism training was of particular relevance for us.

Data Journalism and New Technologies

Our research work also explored the consequences of digitalization for journalism. The tenth and final Public Value Lecture in cooperation with the ORF Public Value Competence Center focused on data journalism and the use of new technologies in the media. The role of social media as a public arena and platform for political debate was dealt with in studies and lectures as was the blurring of boundaries and ethical challenges in communication practice. A study by Gisela Reiter on this topic was awarded the prestigious “Top Three Faculty Papers Award“ at the conference of the International Communication Association in Toronto.

FH-Prof.in Mag.a Dr.in Daniela Süssenbacher
Head of Journalism & Media Management Study Programs

In October 2023 FHWien der WKW hosted the Annual General Meeting of the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) and the accompanying conference on “Digital Storytelling – Next steps”, at which schools of journalism from across Europe came together to discuss the current state of journalism and its importance for journalism training.

The EJTA organizes this annual meeting to hear the voices of its members and to promote international cooperation. A wide range of topics was discussed during the annual general meeting, some of which were of particular interest to participants: Data journalism, artificial intelligence, sustainable media, fact checking and inclusive journalism. All of these are issues that cannot be dealt with solely at a national level and they underline the need for international collaboration in journalism training so that we can shape the future of journalism together.

Management & Entrepreneurship

Practical Preparation for Leadership Roles

With a strong focus on practical relevance, the Management & Entrepreneurship study programs prepare students in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s program at various levels for future leadership roles.

The 2023/24 winter semester saw the introduction of the revised curricula that had been adapted to meet the latest challenges in the working world. Key changes include an even stronger focus on sustainability and responsible business practices as well as an increase in the number of specialization modules from three to six. Drawing up business plans, carrying out realistic assignments and practical projects commissioned by external companies and organizations underline the program’s very high level of practical relevance.

The range of project topics this year again covered the entire portfolio of entrepreneurial activities. One of the highlights was surely the project from the field of strategic management, in which students developed a concept for a motorsport venue to help the event location become more energy self-sufficient. Not only were the students able to present their concept to the operator at the location, they were also invited to the Architecture Biennale 2023 in Venice where a physical model of the grandstand was exhibited.

Manfred Schieber, MA MBA MSc
Head of Management & Entrepreneurship Study Programs

What makes studying for a Master’s in Executive Management so special is the fact that it has an interdisciplinary focus that gives the students a sound understanding of various corporate processes. Projects as part of teaching and lectures held by well-known entrepreneurs and faculty members promote networking between students and real-life managers. This allows them to expand their networks with interesting contacts while they’re still studying.

Marketing & Sales Management

We Love and Live Digital Marketing and Sustainability

In 2023 our study programs received two awards for excellent Master’s theses. Rebecca Daul took first place in the edcom Graduation Competition with her thesis on digital storytelling for vacation trips. An outstanding second place at the ECR Award went to Charlotte Zdasky for her Master’s thesis on the opportunities and risks of rebranding in the food retail sector. The Alumni Talk with Hannes Glavanovits also focused on sales and food retailing. Our former student offered us exclusive insights into the best practices of target group-oriented product range selection and explained how a customer loyalty app can work without personal user data.

Our researchers followed “digital breadcrumbs“ along tourist paths and developed a scale for measuring the expectations placed in brands in customer-brand relationships. They also asked which sustainability features at online stores are actually noticed by users. They shared the results with the scientific community, for example through conference presentations at the Global Marketing Conference and the EMAC.

At a joint event with the Marketing Club Austria we discussed with company representatives from a wide range of industries the multifaceted topic “Sustainability Megatrend or Daily Business?“ at a perfect location, the City IKEA near Vienna’s Westbahnhof train station.

Our students also got top marks for a practical project for Procter & Gamble which had commissioned them to develop 360 degree communication concepts for a product launch.

Real Estate Management

Focus on Sustainability and Digitalization

In 2023 the dominant topics on the Real Estate Management study programs were sustainability and digitalization, which since the introduction of the new curricula in the 2023/24 winter semester have been firmly embedded in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs.

The highlight of the year was the launch in June of the Endowed Professorship for Sustainable Real Estate Development held by Anna-Vera Deinhammer. This professorship will make it possible to explore sustainability issues in project development even more deeply, to play an active role in the development of ÖNORM standards and to take part in international bodies and events. Three times a year the research results will be discussed with the professorship’s sponsors TPA Steuerberatung GmbH, BUWOG Group GmbH, LENIKUS Immobilien GmbH and Erste Bank. As the research results will also be incorporated into our teaching, they will enhance the already high quality of teaching on the Real Estate Management study programs.

A wide variety of events enabled students to gain insights into the practical side of the real estate industry. A field trip organized in cooperation with the Hochschule Fresenius gave them the opportunity to view a number of projects in Berlin. We also hosted students from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Many industry partners accepted our invitation to the first Real Estate Digital Day with students able to take home some valuable ideas and inspiration for their professional development. Quarterly ESG talks were held with experts, including representatives from the study programs, a bank, a real estate valuer, a property developer and an asset management firm.

Special attention was given to the principle of “Study Real Business”, which was implemented in the form of monthly visits to real estate projects in Vienna for example. This provided students with valuable insights into current projects; one special highlight was the excursion to the U5 metro line construction site.

Dr. Klemens Braunisch, MRICS
Head of Real Estate Management Study Programs

Even though I had already established my own individual enterprise, I decided to enroll on the Bachelor’s study program in Real Estate at FHWien der WKW as a part-time student. The lectures with their strong practical focus and the countless contacts I have made among lecturers, mentors and fellow students have opened up an amazing number of new opportunities for me. My personal network has grown enormously – proving very beneficial to my professional career, too.

Tourism & Hospitality Management

Tourism Education Combines Research and Practice

Activities of the Tourism & Hospitality Management study programs in 2023 very much reflected global and local developments in the tourism sector. While international tourism has bounced back to pre-crisis levels, the demands made on the industry in terms of sustainability and digital transformation grew. As a dependable educational partner for the tourism industry and as part of the academic community we are proud to have contributed to this development.

The Endowed Professorship for Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development established in August 2023 and sponsored by the WKW has enabled us to deepen our academic research thus enhancing our reputation as an educational center for urban tourism. In the reporting year we also celebrated the graduation of the first class to take the Master’s program in Urban Tourism & Visitor Economy Management launched in 2021, thus establishing the study program in the tourism industry.

In October 2023 more than 250 colleagues from international higher education institutes specializing in hospitality, event and tourism management met at the EuroCHRIE conference hosted by FHWien der WKW. There was plenty of lively academic debate in the form of presentations, posters and workshops. The conference not only enabled us to position the study programs and FHWien der WKW internationally, it also underscored our academic expertise.

Following successful accreditation, the thoroughly revised curricula for the Bachelor’s program in Tourism Management were implemented for the first time. This makes us the only university in Austria to offer a business study program with alternating theory and practical phases. With renowned companies from the tourism industry as partners, we train future employees of these companies in a way that has a strong practical focus and a sound scientific foundation.

Dr. Florian Aubke
Head of Tourism & Hospitality Management Study Programs

Tourism is one of the sectors in the world economy that has been hardest hit by the corona crisis. While in the past urban tourism was the main growth driver, for a variety of reasons it will not be possible to simply return to the “old normal” even after COVID-19.

This new Master’s program conveys the exciting possibilities that exist to rethink the sustainable development of urban tourism. Because in the future, it will become increasingly important to balance the wishes and interests of visitors and local populations. Against this background, destination development takes on a new meaning that takes much more into consideration than does an approach focused purely on tourism.

During the study program students are able to test and apply what they have learned in theory and practice as together they develop a vision for the future of urban tourism!

Alumni & Career Services

Alumni Services

Alumni Services offers FHWien der WKW graduates a platform so they can stay connected with former fellow students and lecturers, keep up with what is going on at the university and use parts of its infrastructure. An annual highlight is the presentation of the Alumni Awards, which in 2023 were awarded to nine outstanding graduates. The Award categories are Professional Achievements, Shaping the Future and Exceptional Commitment to FHWien der WKW.

The graduates reflect the diversity of the careers that are possible with a degree from FHWien der WKW. The online event series “Alumni Talk” regularly throws the spotlight on graduates who come to talk to students and other alumni about their experiences.

Career Services

Career Services supports students and alumni with their career planning. During the Career Week in October 2023, students had the opportunity to network with representatives of leading companies. The event took place online and on campus over several days and offered a supporting program covering all aspects of careers and job applications. Career Services also runs the in-house online job platform, the Career Center, which enables students and alumni to access job ads from Austria and abroad.

Corporate Partnerships

Alumni & Career Services maintains direct contact with recruiters from leading Austrian firms and with graduates who hold positions in business. Activities include setting up cooperation agreements as well as implementing the agreed activities.

Gender & Diversity

Manual on “Studying with a Disability”

What are fair and equitable exam conditions for students with a disability? Can they spend a semester abroad?

These and other questions were addressed in 2023 when the “Studying with a Disability” manual was drawn up. It now serves as the first manual for FHWien der WKW staff, in particular internal teaching staff, study program heads and Professional Services who are in direct contact with students. The Gender and Diversity Officer is always happy to answer more specific questions.

While not claiming to be exhaustive, the manual covers the most important aspects of the study cycle from application to graduation. Among others, it deals with the following issues:

  • What do we mean by disability?
  • Legal basis
  • Application and admissions procedure
  • Communication and raising awareness among teaching staff and other employees
  • Integration in the cohort
  • Physical and virtual accessibility
  • Alternative assessments for students with disabilities
  • Writing academic papers

Creating Accessible Documents

This was the title of an online workshop with Gerhard Nussbaum from the Competence Network Information Technology to Support the Integration of People with Disabilities (KI-I) organized by the Teaching & Learning Center in September. Key aspects of creating accessible documents were explained as was the use of accessibility checks to support employees in their contact with disabled students, especially those with visual impairments.

Internationalization at FHWien der WKW

International student mobility continued to develop well in 2023, with 348 students completing a study-abroad semester and 55 an Erasmus internship abroad. An increasing number of students also took advantage of the opportunity to participate in an international Erasmus short-term mobility program. 303 Incoming Students from 30 countries chose FHWien der WKW as their host university.

25 members of our university’s staff spent time abroad in eight European countries on the Erasmus Staff Mobility program. 17 of them taught at a partner university, eight took part in a continuing education program. The participants came from six study programs as well as the Competence Center for Business English and the Center for International Education and Mobility (CIEM).

Completion of the first year of the MA-23-funded project EDU-INNO-KOOP meant that important interim results became available. In the first project phase part-time students were asked about their needs and the teaching staff’s previous experience with short-term international mobility was analyzed. This enabled us to develop the cornerstones of the new mobility format which we plan to test soon in a pilot phase. The second phase of the project was dedicated to evaluating our partner universities. Feedback was collected from all stakeholders and in the second year of the project will be amalgamated for the purpose of evaluation. This will make it possible to classify our partnerships.

The CIEM also made progress in partner university management with regard to the digital conclusion and renewal of agreements as well as the documentation of information on partner universities.

TeamLife at FHWien der WKW

People from academia and the business world come together at FHWien der WKW to provide students with an outstanding academic education, and the business world and international scientific community with application-oriented research.

Diverse, engaging, meaningful – these values underpin all our work in teaching, research and administration at FHWien der WKW. They drive us, motivate us, and bind us together.

Our values do not just exist on paper – we constantly take measures to bring them to life. Even during the onboarding process we invite new members of staff to familiarize themselves with our values at a workshop.

An important role is played by the VIS-Zack Team – a group of brand ambassadors from all areas of the company.

The VIS-Zacks

  • develop measures to make our values visible
  • collect input and the concerns of employees and communicate them to the management.
  • act as a self-reflection group (e.g., within the framework of employee surveys)
  • actively contribute to clearing up misunderstandings and promoting a transparent working environment.
  • hold events (e.g., pub quiz, blind coffee) to network the different departments.

At FHWien der WKW we practice and promote open communication – not just through the VIS-Zacks, but through regular feedback meetings and roundtable discussions with management.

Our staff events in a wide variety of formats also encourage networking and provide a forum for open exchange. We take great satisfaction from the immense willingness of our colleagues to help others, to support one another and to share their know-how.

Promoting the health of all our employees is a corporate goal: We have therefore committed ourselves to the BGF Charta and are guided by the principles of a healthy company. In 2024 we were awarded the BGF Seal of Quality by the Österreichische Gesundheitskasse: For insights into our efforts to promote health at our university watch this video.

All these activities take place under the name TeamLife. More on this can be found in the following video.

Tradition and Innovation

For FHWien der WKW, the year 2023 was all about growth and embarking on new paths. One profound change came as early as January. This was when our university of applied sciences took over the Hernstein Institute for Management and Leadership. For more than 50 years, the Institute has taught leadership and management skills and accompanied executives and businesses on the path to success. Hernstein is thus a perfect fit for our university’s focus on management and communication.

Our oldest study program – namely, Tourism Management – proved its forward-looking approach with an innovation in the year under review: Since fall 2023, the Bachelor’s program in Tourism Management has also been conducted in a dual format. This is the first dual study program at FHWien der WKW. Once they have finished the course, alumni will have a degree under their belt as well as two years of relevant work experience.

Our youngest department – Digital Economy – also presented an innovation: the Master’s program in Digital Technology & Innovation. This technical-interdisciplinary program is scheduled to begin in fall 2024. 60 percent of the teaching will take place online. It will equip students with technical expertise and prepare them to manage innovation projects.

We have also expanded business-oriented research activities at FHWien der WKW by setting up two endowed professorships. In early June, Anna-Vera Deinhammer took over the professorship for Sustainable Real Estate Development sponsored by a consortium of four corporate donors. The second endowed professorship addresses Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development and is funded by the Vienna Economic Chamber. Cornelia Dlabaja took over the professorship in early August 2023.

Our portfolio of continuing education programs has also been expanded: The part-time Bachelor’s program in Insurance Management began for the first time in fall 2023. It combines law, economics and insurance and was developed in cooperation with renowned insurance companies. Additional courses have also been designed and will broaden the portfolio at a later date.

I would like to thank our teaching, research and administrative staff for their dedication. They provide our students with a first-class education, address issues in their research that move our society and economy and ensure that university operations run smoothly. Together, it is they who make the continuing success and positive development of FHWien der WKW possible in the first place.

AI in Teaching, New Curricula, Hybrid Classrooms

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its many potential applications in education and at work were a hot topic too at our university of applied sciences in 2023. How can we use AI tools meaningfully and responsibly in our teaching activities – with the aim of optimally preparing our students for the challenges of the digital transformation? We addressed this question in a process of intensive dialogue with our lecturers and gained our first experience with the use of AI in our study programs. We considered both the potential as well as the limitations and risks of AI and were guided by the ethical principles that we uphold as a university. Work began on a reference framework that describes our vision and strategy for AI-assisted teaching.

A further milestone was the implementation of the revised curricula, which we had been working on for several years. In the 2023/24 winter semester all Bachelor’s and Master’s programs began to follow the new curricula, which are geared to the current demands of career fields and occupational profiles. In the process, we not only strengthened specialist expertise, we also reinforced interdisciplinary skills such as digital and sustainability competencies. We firmly believe that the new curricula will enable us to offer our students a high-quality, forward-looking education that will qualify them for the World of Work 4.0.

The further development of our infrastructure formed a third focus in 2023. Here, we seized the opportunity offered by the refurbishment of the wko campus wien. We constructed a number of new classrooms that allow hybrid courses, enabling us to respond more flexibly to the needs of our students and lecturers. The hybrid classrooms are all equipped with state-of-the-art technology for communication and collaboration between those who are physically present and those who take part in instruction online. Thanks to these rooms, we will be able to further improve the quality of our teaching.

We are proud of all that we achieved in 2023 and thank everyone who has contributed to offering our students an education that optimally prepares them for their profession.

Business Orientation and Practical Relevance as Factors for Success

Among the many benefits of Vienna as a business location, one is especially important: the availability of highly trained workers and management personnel. Since 1994, FHWien der WKW has been making a key contribution in this regard. With real-world oriented curricula, the university’s study programs are precisely tailored to meet industry demand. The university’s graduates are highly sought-after on the job market and many of them reach the top of their profession.

Lecturers with a background in business

FHWien der WKW has established itself as Austria’s leading university of applied sciences for management and communication and decisively shapes Vienna’s educational landscape. As owners, the Vienna Economic Chamber (Wirtschaftskammer Wien / WKW) and the Vienna Business Fund (Fonds der Wiener Kaufmannschaft) have been committed to FHWien der WKW’s mission from the start, thus supporting business-oriented teaching and research in Austria.

Two thirds of the lecturers at FHWien der WKW have a background in business. As specialists and managers, they gain the experience that they then pass on to students. Practical projects commissioned by companies bring students into contact with the business world – a starting advantage when entering professional life.

Research as a source of inspiration for companies

In its curricula, FHWien der WKW addresses topics that are important for the economy. These include social and ecological sustainability as well as digital transformation. FHWien also cooperates with companies in research – for example in the Endowed Professorship for Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development established in August 2023, which is funded by WKW. It acts as a source of ideas and knowledge hub for tourism and other industries.

Combining work and continuing education

An educational program tailored to the needs of working professionals is a particular concern of WKW and the Vienna Business Fund. With its part-time degree programs and continuing education programs, FHWien der WKW makes it possible to combine continuing education with work and private life.

In January 2023, the university of applied sciences took over the Hernstein Institute for Management and Leadership. While its degree programs prepare the specialists and managers of tomorrow for successful careers, they can later develop their leadership skills in Hernstein’s trainings while working. This makes FHWien der WKW a unique provider in the higher education sector.

Additional Business Area, New Market, Expansion of the Product Portfolio

In 2023 the Hernstein Institute for Management and Leadership got a new owner – FHWien der WKW. Implementing the resulting change processes on top of all the usual work, presented both the Hernstein team and all those involved in the merger at FHWien der WKW with no mean challenge.

Navigating the new environment successfully meant more than just finding our way around the new premises in Währinger Straße, we also had to become accustomed to cultural differences.

Nevertheless, despite the many change projects, our focus throughout the year remained firmly fixed on not neglecting our work with and for our clients. We are therefore proud that the end of year figures show that we not only achieved this goal, but even exceeded it, topping the previous year’s result by 15% in 2023.

There were also two other important milestones for the Hernstein Institute: on the one hand, the re-establishment of consulting in organizational development as an additional business area, and on the other, the expansion of our target market beyond Austria’s borders to Germany. At the same time, we pressed ahead with the continuous development of our product portfolio. Even in a year with so many changes, we added 4 new training courses to our open programs.

The Hernstein Institute staff were warmly welcomed by our new “mother,” and we received all the support we could have wished for. A great many additional resources were made available for this, for which I would like to express my sincere thanks. Special thanks are also due to the Hernstein team and the Hernstein trainers for their loyalty and team spirit in this period of change.

Activities, Successes and Challenges

In 2023 the number of students in academic continuing education programs rose to a new record of approximately 950, enrolled in 21 different programs. To date, some 3,550 students have completed a continuing education program at FHWien der WKW.

After a two-year transition phase, the provisions of the amended Universities of Applied Sciences Act for continuing education programs (FHG) came into force in fall 2023. Whereas the established MSc programs ending with a “Master of Science” began for the final time in September, the new continuing education programs are already being offered with the titles BA (CE), MA (CE), BPr and EMBA. The adaptation of the curricula to the new legal framework was a milestone.

The “academies for continuing education” (Berufsakademien), run successfully for years as MSc programs in cooperation with WIFI, were also adapted to comply with the amended FHG. The first new programs will begin in fall 2024 as BPr Applied Business Management and BPr Accounting; additional programs are already being planned or prepared.

Additional continuing education programs were created independently of the legal changes. One of them, the compact training course HR in Tourism was successfully launched in September 2023. This certificate program offers a unique combination of HR and tourism know-how.

Just as unique is the well-established but innovative Master’s program MA (CE) in Digital Communication and Marketing. Each year, a taster seminar is organized for potential students, this time on the topical subject of “Corporate chatbots with ChatGPT”. We are pleased to say that again a record number of participants registered for the taster seminar. With innovative AI tools in teaching and the use of new, hybrid lecture rooms, the Vienna Management Academy is at the forefront of technology.

The continuing education programs of FHWien der WKW get high marks for their outstanding practical relevance. This is especially true of the corporate academies run in cooperation with partners such as Raiffeisen Campus (BPr Premium Banking), Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich-Wien (compact seminar ESG & Sustainable Finance), the Helvetia and Zurich insurance companies (BA (CE) Insurance Management) and Echo Medienhaus (certificate program Digital Transformation).

Practical relevance also means applying what has been learnt directly on the job – a challenge that Echo Medienhaus masters with flying colors. Work in the editorial department continues uninterrupted. This illustrates the success of our sector-specific programs which will be expanded in the areas of journalism and real estate: with the Master’s program MA (CE) in Cross Media and Data Journalism and the planned Bachelor’s program BPr in Real Estate Management.

The world of financial services is in a state of constant change and is evolving at a remarkable pace. FinTechs, blockchain, artificial intelligence: The drivers of these transformation processes are innovative technologies. Yet one constant remains: It is people who form the focus of services. This is precisely where the Master’s program in Premium Banking comes in as it teaches the necessary knowledge and skills with even greater precision enabling graduates to respond to the wishes and situation of individual customers: from one person to another and with the help of innovative technologies and the latest psychological insights.

Exchange and Continuing Education for Successful Research

The processes and areas of work established in the Research Department in the previous two years were further optimized and continued in 2023.

A next step toward harmonizing the online presence of research at FHWien der WKW was taken in 2023 when the Department of Communication’s web page on research conducted by the study programs went live. Additional project pages as well as a growing project archive complete FHWien der WKW’s online research platform which serves as an information hub and contact point for anyone interested in our work.

Internal exchange among researchers at FHWien der WKW was facilitated by the “Brown Bag” lecture series, the research colloquia and the “Research Roundtable”. Especially this roundtable, which is held once every semester, offers the opportunity to enter into discussion with research-relevant departments such as the library or the Teaching & Learning Center and to advance issues of common concern.

The range of workshops offered as part of the internal continuing education program was increased with the introduction of the regular “PR for Research & Teaching” workshop. In addition, the Research Department organized workshops on EU research funding and academic writing, both of which stimulated a lively exchange with national and international lecturers.

Research Department Highlights in 2023

  • New Department of Communication web page on research conducted by the study programs
  • Academic Paper Writing Workshop with Johann Fortwengel from King’s College London
  • Internal training “PR for Research & Teaching” in cooperation with Corporate Communication
  • Workshop on EU research funding in cooperation with TU Wien

Sustainable Transformation in Business and Teaching

In 2023 the Institute for Business Ethics and Sustainable Strategy (IBES) very much revolved around the Competence Team “Change for Corporate Sustainability“ (TransformS), funded by the City of Vienna (MA 23). Since 2021 the team has researched how Austrian companies can build the necessary strategic change competencies (Dynamic Capabilities for Sustainability) for the transformation toward sustainability.

Sustainable Strategies in Management and Business Practice

To ensure the transfer of their research results into operational practice, members of the Competence Team met with representatives of manufacturing companies in Austria to discuss the importance of strategic change for greater business sustainability. Other subjects discussed included the importance of developing and implementing sustainable business innovations with participants emphasizing the positive impacts these can have on the environment and society.

A typology developed as part of the project shows how well companies are able to respond to external conditions and adapt to requirements. This enables managers to focus their company’s sustainability strategy with greater accuracy and to develop a better appreciation of the skills needed to integrate all stakeholders in the sustainable innovation process.

Change Competence for Sustainable Transformation in Teaching

The Certificate for Sustainability Change Agents was launched as a pilot project for FHWien der WKW students in the 2022/23 winter semester. Following the successful start, the extra-curricular continuing education course was repeated in the 2023/24 winter semester. The course equips participants with the skills they need to initiate changes toward sustainability in organizations and thus help to shape the future responsibly. The Responsible Management Lectures completed the programs for greater sustainability at FHWien der WKW.

Research for Business, Teaching and Logistics

In 2023 work at the Institute for Digital Transformation and Strategy (IDS) focused mainly on the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and on diverse areas of the logistics sector. Another priority was the development of a learning studio for hybrid teams.

Digital Transformation in SMEs and Teaching

With “Organizational Ambidexterity in SMEs” the IDS presented a study that asked how companies can master the digital transformation through exploration and exploitation. The study was conducted as part of the eponymous project funded by the City of Vienna (MA 23). A second project funded by the City of Vienna is “Learning Studio for Hybrid Teams“ which began in 2023. The learning studio will create an infrastructure for hybrid collaboration (a combination of classroom-based learning and digitally supported distance learning) which will be gradually integrated into teaching activities as the project progresses. The learning studio will be available to students and teachers as an experimental and learning space for practical teamwork in hybrid settings.

Digitalization of Pharmaceutical, Military and Parcel Logistics

The DigiPharmaLogNet project begun in 2021 was successfully completed in 2023. The knowledge gained from the project for the further development, digitalization and automation of logistics in the pharmaceutical industry led to two FFG-funded follow-up projects:

  • “RESISTANT“ seeks to use the concept of self-organizing reusable boxes to help increase the resilience of military logistics on the basis of an end-to-end digitalized, dislocated and autonomous supply chain.
  • The “ReKEP“ project explores the use of reusable transport containers instead of (disposable) cardboard packaging in the CEP (courier, express, parcel) sector. Digitally supported processes and services will be developed and analyzed on the basis of the three pillars of sustainability (economy, ecology and social).
