Invitation to the interdisciplinary conference: Urban and tourism research in dialogue

September 24-26, 2025

This three-day conference will bring together urban and tourism research with city administration and planning. Renowned players from tourism research (FHWien der WKW), urban research (TU Wien, FH Campus Wien, University of Vienna) will provide scientific and practical findings from their fields of expertise. This conference aims to bring together urban and tourism research with city administration and planning to foster a comprehensive dialogue on the sustainable development of cities and their tourism sectors. 

Take the opportunity to exchange ideas in an interdisciplinary environment and gain new impulses for current social challenges. This conference not only offers valuable insights, but also an interdisciplinary exchange and thinking space that promotes innovative solutions 

The conference is hosted by the WKW endowed Professorship ‘Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development’ by FH-Prof. Dr. Cornelia Dlabaja and the Tourism & Hospitality Management Department of FHWien der WKW in cooperation with the ÖGS Urban Research Section and the Social Inequality Section. The conference is designed as Green Event.

The academic board consists of leading academic institutions, such as FHWien der WKW, TU Wien, FH Campus Wien, BOKU, University of Udine, University of Westminster, IMC Krems and the University of Vienna. This conference will create a platform for scientific and practice-oriented discussions. It will provide an interdisciplinary space for exchange, aiming to address and find solutions for some of the most pressing societal challenges in the urban context. 

Call for Papers

The Call for Papers opens on 16 December 2024. Please use this link, which will redirect you to the conference page.

We invite scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to submit abstracts that engage with the themes outlined below. We welcome contributions from various disciplines, including but not limited to urban studies, tourism research, architecture, sociology, economics, and environmental sciences. 

Submissions can explore challenges and opportunities in both large cities as well as small and medium-sized towns, providing a comparative perspective or focusing on specific case studies.

  11. Entangled Placemaking in Tourism and urban development​ 
  12. Caring for Heritage and multispecies in a sustainable way​ 

Contribution formats: Research papers, practice reports, policy papers and debate contributions

All submissions will be submitted by the participants for one of the twelve panels in the scope of 350 words. The submission includes a paper title, the abstract as well as five keywords which will be submitted via Conftool from 15 January 2025.
