September 6, 2024

The renowned Bloomberg Terminal has been available to students on the Financial Management degree program since the winter semester 2023/24. At FHWien der WKW, students ‘study practice’ because this powerful tool allows future financial experts to apply their knowledge directly.

The Bloomberg Terminal is a software system developed by the American financial services provider Bloomberg L.P. It provides real-time data and historical time series for equity, foreign exchange, commodity and fixed income markets. News and information on companies, sectors and markets can also be accessed.

Overall, the Bloomberg Terminal is recognized for its ability to provide accurate and timely data for business and research purposes and has become an indispensable resource for financial industry professionals. Nearly all major international banks, financial service providers and listed companies use the Bloomberg Terminal as an information and trading platform. As a result, Bloomberg knowledge is in high demand on the banking and financing market.

Powerful tool for tomorrow’s finance professionals

At the beginning of the semester, the students were shown the basic functions of Bloomberg in the financial sector in the ‘Financing’ and ‘Strategic Management’ courses. Here they learnt how to retrieve long-term industry information and current economic forecasts from the Bloomberg tool to incorporate this information into the development of corporate strategies.

At the end of the semester, Academic Expert & Lecturer Markus König presented the possible applications of Bloomberg in the area of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to the students of the ‘Capital Markets’ course in the 4th semester of the Bachelor’s degree program in Finance, Accounting and Taxation.

Students were shown in detail how to retrieve information on mergers and acquisitions (including multiples, company financial data at the time of the transaction and transaction details of M&As) from the Bloomberg tool in real time. They learnt how to select this information by industry, region or sector.

This course thus provides a valuable foundation for recording and evaluating M&A transactions with the help of Bloomberg. The students gained practical insights and acquired important skills that will help them to make well-founded decisions in the area of M&A.
