From April, 1 – 3 2019, eighteen Bachelor’s and Master’s students from the Study Programs Journalism & Media Management travelled to Brussels for a study trip financed by the EU. Under the direction of Wolfgang Böhm (EU Head of Department at “Die Presse”), the students explored the center of the EU.
After their arrival on the first day, the students were invited to the EU Parliament on the second day. There they gained insights into the press and social media work of the parliament and discussed current EU policy issues with members of parliament Othmar Karas (ÖVP), Evelyn Regner (SPÖ) and Michel Reimon (Greens). During a short break, the students were given the chance to taste Belgian waffles and roam the city center. During dinner, they talked to correspondents from “Kleine Zeitung”, “APA”, “Salzburger Nachrichten”, “Die Presse” and “ORF” about living and working in Brussels.
On the third day, the students visited the Charlemagne and Berlaymont buildings. They were given an overview of the tasks and objectives of the EU Commission and discussed the refugee crisis and its effects on Europe with Katerina Wolfova from the Directorate-General for Migration. At the midday press briefing, the students sat with the international press representatives in the Berlaymont Press Room. Finally, a tour of the Commission’s own television studio was on the program.
