Over 3500 communication scientists took part in the internationally renowned 69th Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA) in Washington D.C. at the end of May.
Senior Researcher Uta Russmann presented her research on the underrepresentation of Austrian women politicians in the media in the presentation on “Almost invisible: Female politicians’ increasing underrepresentation in campaign coverage in Austria over time” together with Lore Hayek (University of Innsbruck). Politics in Austria is still dominated by men, even though women politicians have occupied 34 % of the seats in the National Council since 2017. The media presence of female politicians, however, is close to zero, even in the height of political communication and in election campaigns.
In addition, Uta Russmann together with Jakob Svensson (Malmö University, Sweden) and Anders Olof Larsson (Kristiania University College, Norway) presented her work on strategic communication on Instagram in the panel on “Instapolitics”.
