Kirstie Riedl, Head of Program, on the career prospects of graduates of the Master’s program in International Sustainability Communication.

Graduates of the continuing education program will become proven, academic experts in sustainability communication – professionals in an area that is currently extremely in demand and will be even more so in the future. This is a topic that concerns many companies in different areas.

As a student, you immerse yourself so deeply and profoundly in the subject that you not only learn to talk and write about sustainability, but you become a fundamental advocate for sustainability – with in-depth academic knowledge and real-world experience.

So the competency is first to communicate sustainability, second to live it, and third to make sure that the whole organization is engaged with sustainability. In a nutshell: Communication ABOUT and FOR Sustainability!

Academically sound knowledge + the necessary “tools” for implementation

We have many lecturers who work in renowned organizations for example in a consulting capacity and who combine their insider knowledge of practice with thorough academic knowledge. These individuals not only bring their expertise and provide the tools for implementation and discourse, but they also bring real-world examples and cases to the classroom.

In some modules, they will then also work through a specific sustainability problem in a very concrete way, suggest possible changes and develop a corresponding communication strategy in parallel.

Master’s program with four semesters – or – short version in two semesters with “Academic Expert” certificate

The first two semesters provide a comprehensive and academically sound insight into the topics of communication and sustainability economics as well as the multidisciplinary fusion of these two aspects. Those who only want to study two semesters can look forward to the “Academic Expert” certificate – awarded by Austria’s leading University of Applied Sciences for Management & Communication.

In the third and fourth semesters, the focus is then more on strategy and transformation management, and through various modules, students gain even deeper insights into practice as well as possible future scenarios and the latest tools. And last but not least, the last semester is mainly about the student’s own Master’s thesis and the associated academic title – and above all about the individual transformation into the personal everyday working life. It is not for nothing that the credo of FHWien der WKW is: “Study Real Business!”
