In their current study, researchers Ilona Pezenka and David Dobrowsky from FHWien der WKW are investigating which content in conversations with chatbots can lead to certain emotions in humans.
Senior Researcher Ilona Pezenka, David Dobrowsky, head of the Bachelor’s program in Corporate Communication at FHWien der WKW, and Lili Aunimo from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences (Finland), are researching the topic of human-machine interaction and investigating the reactions of users when they communicate with chatbots. For their study “Explorations on Using Facial Expression Data for Studying Emotional Reactions during Chatbot Interaction”, they used the Web Analytics Lab at FHWien der WKW to measure emotions during interaction with the AI.
To do this, they analyzed the biometric data of users that was collected to measure emotions during interaction with a chatbot. The researchers used this to develop an annotation scheme that enables systematic evaluation: at data points where the emotions were most pronounced, they analyzed in more detail what was being talked about and then systematically assigned these to specific categories.
David Dobrowsky presented the study at the “Conversations Conference” in Thessaloniki. He found inspiration in the lively exchange with researchers from all over Europe. We are already looking forward to further findings in the field of human-machine interaction!
