Gertraud Eregger, a Styrian living as an HR expert in Ethiopia and now in Jamaica, shares her expat experience
Internationalization and the ongoing increase in cultural diversity holds a lot of as well as challenges for organizations. The number of intercultural encounters is constantly increasing, and at the same time the complexity and the demands with which intercultural encounters are mastered in our society and in companies are increasing. Expatriations continue to gain in importance: this is clearly shown by the results of the 2012 Mercer study, which shows that more than 70% of companies expect an increase in short-term foreign assignments in 2013, and 55% also expect an increase in long-term secondments.
Gertraud Eregger, a Styrian HR expert who first worked in Ethiopia and is now working in Jamaica in the area of HR and organizational development, discussed her intercultural experiences in two very different countries with students of the Master program in Organizational & Personnel Development, but also the differences between human resources management and organizational development in these countries.
