Observation in the admission process: Easy, but not simple

June 4, 2024

As part of the admissions procedure for the Bachelor’s program in Human Resources Management, 4th semester students experience first-hand what it means to “study practice”. Once again, this year, they were involved as assessors in the assessment center and observed the applicants in various tasks.

When 4th semester students of the Bachelor’s program in Human Resources Management take the “Assessment Center” course, they learn more than just the theory behind this complex selection process. During May, they put the content taught into practice: They become observers in the selection of applicants for the Human Resource Management study program.

In the framework of an Assessment Center, applicants are observed by several people, their behavior is described and finally evaluated. An underlying requirements profile serves as the basis. In order to avoid potential assessment tendencies, the observations of the assessors are then compared and discussed at an observer conference and the final assessments are recorded.

Right at the beginning of the course, students notice how quickly we add personal interpretations to observations based on our own expectations and emotions. In the course of selection procedures, however, these selective perceptions are often counterproductive and can lead to misconceptions. For this reason, a well-trained team is a key quality criterion in this endeavor.

The Human Resources & Organization Study Program team and the external lecturers involved were also able to “observe” something essential: an all-round committed team of students and lecturers who carried out their role with the utmost care and consideration.
