At the beginning of December, the course ‘System Tourism and Sustainability’ offered Tourism & Hospitality Management students a very special opportunity: to be tourists themselves and visit the world-famous Schönbrunn Palace. Of course, a look behind the scenes was also part of the program.
The visit began with a lecture by Alumni Christina Schumann and Florian Felder, who now hold leading positions in the Schönbrunn Group. The two experts gave the students exclusive insights into the management of such an important tourist attraction as Schönbrunn Palace. They explained the challenges and opportunities associated with managing a cultural organization of this size and gave the students valuable tips for their future careers.
The students then went on a short guided tour of the magnificent palace. Equipped with audio guides, they were able to explore some of the 1,441 rooms on their own.
Overtourism in Vienna
With over 3,271,000 visitors in 2023, Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most visited sights in Austria and has to deal with the complex issue of overtourism. The large crowds of visitors moving through the packed halls emphasize the importance of sustainable tourism management.
