Our student Katrin Rother (BA Marketing & Sales) is currently spending the last weeks of her semester abroad in the Netherlands at the HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen. She has enjoyed the five months in the “Stad aan Zee” (City by the Sea) to the fullest and would like to recommend Vlissingen as a semester abroad destination to other students.
My experiences:
Despite Corona and all the challenges that come with it, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to spend a semester abroad and therefore spent my 4th semester as part of my Bachelor’s program in Marketing & Sales at the HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen/Netherlands. And what can I say? I have not regretted a single moment!
Vlissingen was my first choice – I really wanted to go to the Netherlands and Vlissingen, the “Stad aan Zee” (the city by the sea), was just right for me. Five months living directly by the sea and only a few minutes away from the beach – that’s really something! There were some highlights – the tulip blossom in April was fantastic, the Dutch cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague (I even saw Queen Maxima there) and Breda are really worth seeing and the Zeeland region, where Vlissingen is located, I took straight to my heart during my bike tours. The many beautiful hours on the beach with my newfound friends are certainly also a highlight.
I received a very warm welcome, both from the teaching staff at HZ and from my fellow students. We were only a very small group and therefore the way of teaching was also very personal. My favorite course was Digital Marketing because here we combined theory and practice very well through a great project work.
Can I recommend doing a semester abroad in Vlissingen? Yes, definitely! A good rain- and windproof jacket should definitely be in your luggage, the weather here can be quite moody, but that never actually dampened the mood! I felt really comfortable and the five months went by incredibly fast.
