Transformative ideas for the building sector

June 13, 2024

What does it take to drive transformative change in the building sector? Foundation Professor Anna-Vera Deinhammer formed the Austrian delegation at the Buildings and Climate Global Forum in Paris together with ÖGNI Executive Committee member and Co-Chair of the WorldGBC European Regional Network Richard Teichmann.

The Buildings and Climate Global Forum, organized by the French government and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) with the support of the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction, took place in Paris at the beginning of March. The aim of the forum: to accelerate decarbonisation in the building sector and limit global warming to 1.5°C. More than 800 international delegates, ministers and representatives of key organizations came together for the event.

International cooperation for sustainable change

In order to achieve transformative change in the building sector, international and multi-layered cooperation between all players in the value chain is necessary. To this end, Anna-Vera Deinhammer, Endowed Professor for Sustainable Real Estate Development at FHWien der WKW & ÖGNI delegate, developed and conducted the exclusive, non-public Design Thinking Workshop ‘How to proceed with sustainability in a changing political environment’ together with the representatives of the European Green Building Councils as part of the content preparation at expert level on the previous day.

Applied science and commercial expertise work together synergistically, so sustainability actually becomes a business case,’ says Anna-Vera Deinhammer about her workshop.

Deinhammer also took this opportunity to present the European R&D project INDICATE as head of the national consortium, which is intended to support the transfer of the new EU Energy Efficiency Directive for Buildings to a national framework. She discussed this project with the various stakeholder groups during the course of the congress. The main focus is on collecting representative data, creating benchmarks, analyzing and compiling national building data and collaborating with stakeholders. As a result, recommendations for political implementation will be developed.
