With over 330 shops on 198,000 m² and 24.5 million visitors per year, Westfield Shopping City Süd is the largest shopping centre in Austria. In addition to around 60 restaurants, there are 10,000 free parking spaces and a wide range of entertainment on offer. But the SCS is more than just a place to shop. It is also an important economic factor and employer in the region.
As part of an excursion for the Bachelor’s program in Real Estate and the Master’s program in Real Estate Management at FHWien der WKW, students had the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at SCS. Centre Manager Zsolt Juhasz, currently a student himself, guided the group through the centre and explained the many different tasks of centre management and introduced the operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield Austria. The students were particularly impressed by Austria’s most modern cinema, the Cineplexx SCS, which only opened in December 2023.
The main topics of the tour included:
- The historical development of SCS
- The desired EU taxonomy conformity
- Key performance indicators (KPIs) for centre management
- The leasing strategy
- Challenges and necessities of the ongoing refurbishments
- Photovoltaics – the SCS as a power plant
The excursion offered the students a deep insight into the world of centre management and highlighted the challenges that SCS is facing in the course of digitalization and the transformation of the retail landscape. The tour also showed that Austria’s largest shopping centre is on the way to a sustainable future.
We would like to thank Zsolt Juhasz and the entire team at Westfield Shopping City Süd for the informative and exciting tour!
