Award-winning TV report addresses the problems of asylum seekers in the labour market

The two students Markus Scheffler and Ralf Waldhart submitted the best contribution in the category TV/Video. In their TV report about volunteers at the Wiener Tafel, they deal with the problems of asylum seekers on the Austrian labour market. “On behalf of many committed works by students of FHWien der WKW, they took on a social association and – still – an extremely topical topic,” the jury explained. “The contribution offers a good mixture of fact-based reporting and an on-site milieu study”.

The best entry in the Radio/Audio category was awarded to a group work. Clemens Draxler, Felix Diewald, Juliane Egger, Almud Krejza and Viktoria Posch followed in their contribution “Schieles Wally – How a painting provoked restitutions for Jewish ownership in Austria” the traces of one of the most explosive criminal cases in Austria and illuminated its consequences for restitution policy. The jury summed it up: “Great narration, use of many elements, good rhythm, colourful and varied, well researched, relevant topic. Big compliment”.

Best thesis examined the reporting on “the new, old rights”

Johanna Hirzberger was awarded the special prize for the best thesis. In her work “From niche to mainstream – the new, old right” she dealt with the topic of media reporting on right-wing extremism and its social responsibility. “The dramaturgy of the work is well conceived,” the unanimous verdict of the jury was. “A qualitatively informative work on several levels. The text succinctly sums up highly complex contents, the feature is balanced and objective. The application of various elements brings amusement, stylistic devices create connections. The work makes an extraordinary contribution to the topic, both current and socially relevant.”

Platform for journalism students and graduates

“Young journalists often have to compete with established colleagues at many awards,” says Daniela Süssenbacher, Head of the Journalism & Media Management Study Programs, about the reasons for a new journalism award. “Since the promotion of career starters is particularly important to us as a training centre, the new prize was conceived as a prize for young talent. We want to offer students and graduates a platform and draw attention to the great commitment with which they work on their projects”.

The Journalism Young Talent Award of FHWien der WKW was presented for the first time in 2019. Only students and graduates of the University of Applied Sciences were able to submit papers. The opening of the prize for young journalists from other institutions is planned for the next few years.

The evening was hosted by Michel Mehle, presenter at Radio NJOY 91.3, the educational station of FHWien der WKW.
