Social issues that move people

The works were evaluated by an expert jury. It consisted of Daniela Süssenbacher, Head of Journalism & Media Management Study Programs, and the four Academic Experts & Lecturers Regula Blocher, Carola Leitner, Martin Reichenauer and Karina Schwann from FHWien der WKW. In addition, eight independent journalists were part of the jury: Bea Sommersguter and Natasa Konopitzky (both Ö1) in the Radio & Audio category, Christine Grabner (freelance TV designer) and Eduard Moschitz (ORF) in the TV & Video category, Simone Hoepke (Kurier) and Jakob Winter (Profil) in the Text category, and Yvonne Widler (Kurier) and Robert Varga (APA) in the Multimedia category.
Supporting young journalists in their career entry
The Journalism Young Talent Award is endowed with a total of 3,000 euros. With this award, FHWien der WKW and its training station Radio Radieschen support students and graduates in their career entry and offer them a platform to present themselves to the industry as well as to a larger audience. For the first time, the prize was also opened to young journalists who did not study at FHWien der WKW.
The 2022 award winners
Category Radio & Audio:
“Sternenkinder – Wenn Babys sterben, bevor sie gelebt haben” by Ursi Zeiser
In a sensitive and empathetic way, the radio feature provides insights into the life of a mother who has gone through two still births. Mrs. Zeiser worked dramaturgically very well and gives insights of the everyday life of the affected family in a calm style.
Category TV & Video:
“Normal ist, verschieden zu sein” by Chiara Repolusk and Florian Pirnbacher
Fanny Neumayer works as a secretary in the high school Evangelisches Gymnasium in Vienna-Simmering and is highly appreciated by her team. With the help of Diakonie, she was able to achieve a permanent position despite having trisomy 21. The report accompanies the young woman in her everyday work and impressively points out how integration and inclusion can work in the professional world.
Category Text:
“Hanfansage” by Franciska Rhomberg
The article, published in DATUM, deals with cannabis use without prejudice. A psychotic young man, a convicted dealer, a student who slipped into an anxiety disorder due to cannabis and a young woman for whom smoking pot is a self-healing remedy, they all tell their stories. Experts in addiction prevention also have their say.
Category Multimedia:
“Unruhezustand” by Michael Schön and Sebastian Stainer
This interactive multimedia report addresses voting behavior, old-age poverty and overaging by portraying three extraordinary people. Three pensioners tell why they are involved in social politics. The portraits have been convincingly realized.
Category Best Thesis:
“Gewalttätig zur vierten Gewalt” by Frederik Hocke
The multimedia project highlights the role of journalists in a democracy and describes how violence against media representatives at corona demonstrations endangers reporting. Interviews with affected journalists reveal a growing threat to free journalism.
Special Award Radio Radieschen:
“Wann Satire zu Journalismus wird – journalistische Komponenten in politischen Satire-TV-Formaten in Österreich und Deutschland” by Simon Baumberger
The radio contribution deals with the question if satirical TV formats in Austria and Germany are journalism. The satirists Peter Klien and Fritz Jergitsch, the communication scientist Fritz Hausjell and the journalists Stefan Galoppi and Florian Skrabal have their say.
All award-winning contributions were published in the online magazine Journalismus studieren of the Journalism & Media Management study programs of FHWien der WKW.
