More than 220 delegates from 133 tourism educators from 35 countries met in Vienna. Highlights were the top speakers, the great social program and the award ceremony in the city hall.
Vienna, October 16, 2023 – From October 3 to 6, FHWien der WKW was the venue for EuroCHRIE 2023, the conference of hospitality and tourism education institutions from Europe, the Mediterranean region and Africa. The motto was “Changing Realities. New Opportunities”. The team of the Tourism & Hospitality Management study programs of the Vienna-based university of applied sciences for management and communication had planned the conference as an EcoEvent and provided a varied program that ran smoothly.
Norbert Kettner and Petra Stolba gave presentations
One of the top speakers at EuroCHRIE 2023 was Norbert Kettner, CEO of WienTourismus. He presented the Visitor Economy strategy for Vienna. Petra Stolba, CEO of Österreich Werbung until 2021 and since 2022 Head of Cabinet of the 1st Vice President of the European Parliament, spoke about the European Green Deal and its impact on tourism. In a panel discussion, industry representatives discussed new work realities and challenges in HR management with the audience.
In addition to numerous workshops, lectures and paper presentations, personal exchange was not neglected. The participants particularly appreciated the dialog between representatives of tourism training centers, business, politics and science.
Exchange of knowledge, ideas and best practices
Florian Aubke, Head of Tourism & Hospitality Management Study Programs at FHWien der WKW, is delighted with the success of EuroCHRIE 2023: “We are overwhelmed by the positive response to this event. We were particularly pleased with the appreciative feedback on hosting the conference as an EcoEvent! The meeting provided an ideal platform for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and best practices in the field of hotel and tourism education. The variety of presentations, workshops and discussions showed how dynamic and innovative our industry is and with how much creativity it responds to challenges.”
EuroCHRIE as EcoEvent for the first time
The event, which was held as an EcoEvent, scored points with a particularly sustainable program and organization. For example, the participants went to the social events (e.g. in the Vienna Prater) by public transport, regional and seasonal food was offered, and information on the conference program was provided paperlessly via app.
Award ceremony and gala at Vienna City Hall
The highlight of EuroCHRIE 2023 was the gala with award ceremony on Friday evening at Vienna City Hall. A total of six different awards were presented. The special feature: Instead of presenting statues to the winners, a tree was planted for each of the 220 delegates!
Not only papers and posters were honored, but also an Austrian organization could be pleased about an award: The Austrian Convention Bureau (ACB) received the Regional Industry Award for its outstanding commitment to domestic tourism. ACB CEO Michaela Schedlbauer-Zippusch was visibly delighted to accept the award: “Together with ACB members and the Board of Directors, we have been working for years to promote active exchange and a strong link between education and practice. This award represents an important appreciation for our work in the association to strengthen the industry’s young talent. We have had a close and very successful cooperation with FHWien der WKW since 2010, which is an essential building block in this work.”
Passing the baton to Doha 2024
The event concluded with a handover to Qatar. Next year, representatives of the largest international association of hotel and tourism educators will meet in the capital Doha at a conference on “Hospitality and Tourism in a New Era: Building Bridges and Overcoming Challenges”.
