Generative AI as symbiotic assistance to enhance creativity and innovation capabilities in SMEs

The technological transformation brought about by artificial intelligence (AI) is changing industries, business areas, processes and the way in which innovations are created in companies. Generative AI offers the opportunity to learn from large amounts of data, integrate up-to-date data and generate creative results or support research, analysis and problem solving.

Despite these advantages, the use of AI technologies is a challenge, particularly in domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), due to limited financial and human resources and a lack of skills. The research project is investigating the possible applications of generative AI and “hybrid intelligence”. This refers to the symbiosis of human and artificial intelligence. The project focuses on the agile innovation process of design thinking and practical innovation workshops in SMEs.

The methodological basis of the HybrAId research project is “Design Science Research” for the development of practice-relevant results for SMEs and for scientific evaluation. The focus is on the design and evaluation of a “Symbiotic AI Innovation Assistance” as interactive software with GPTs/chatbots for the systematic application of generative AI and symbiotic human-AI interaction in innovation workshops.

To this end, the following aspects will be examined with innovation and AI experts and SME representatives:

  • Selection of suitable generative AI tools and prompting methods taking gender & diversity aspects into account
  • Conception and evaluation of symbiotic human-AI interaction in innovation workshops
  • Development and evaluation of a “Symbiotic AI Innovation Assistance” with interactive GPTs/chatbots along the innovation process.

Project Goals

The know-how developed will be evaluated in practice-oriented experiments (innovation workshops), published scientifically and presented at international conferences. The “Symbiotic AI Innovation Assistance” will be designed and evaluated as a software prototype (interactive web application) with configurable GPTs/chatbots.

The systematic application of Generative AI by means of AI assistance is intended to enable Viennese SMEs to increase their performance in the areas of creativity, efficiency and quality and to generate (radical) innovations.

The central questions of the project will be answered:

  • How can hybrid intelligence be used to improve innovation generation?
  • How does Generative AI as a creative and analytical assistant contribute to the expansion of human capabilities?
  • How can a symbiotic human-AI interaction be designed and evaluated in creative innovation workshops in order to develop a “Symbiotic AI Innovation Assistance” with interactive GPTs/chatbots for use in the innovation process?
  • How should Generative AI and Symbiotic Interaction be systematically used in innovation workshops to increase the innovation output of SMEs?
