Conference Topics

The topic ‘Caring for the City: Entangled Challenges for Sustainable Urban and Tourism Development’ addresses the current social and practical challenges of urban and tourism development.

The aim of the conference is to connect scientific experts with actors from administration, urban planning and destination development as well as from practice and the tourism industry from different fields. This conference will serve as an interdisciplinary think tank to promote innovative solutions. In addition to traditional formats such as panels in which the scientific contributions are discussed, there will be public talks and walks with experts from administration, business and interest groups. The event will be held as an interdisciplinary green event.

Call for Papers

The Call for Papers opens on 16.12.2024 and will be closed on 30.3.2025. Please use this link, which will redirect you to the conference ConfTool page.

We invite scholars, practitioners and policymakers to submit abstracts that engage with the themes outlined below. We welcome contributions in English from various disciplines, including but not limited to urban studies, tourism research, architecture, sociology, economics and environmental sciences.

Submissions can explore challenges and opportunities in both large cities as well as small and medium-sized towns or regions providing a comparative perspective or focusing on specific case studies.

  • Contribution formats: research papers, practice reports, policy papers and debate contributions
  • Submission formats: Please indicate which format you would like to submit.
  • Research papers: papers based on empirical findings describing and analyzing empirical and theoretical issues
  • Practice reports: findings from tourism practice (tourism, administration, planning). Linking of the practical report to theoretical issues as well as the derivation of general normative findings, is desirable, but not an absolute prerequisite. Practical reports therefore generally represent a detailed (individual) case study.
  • Policy papers: While practice reports and research papers are dominated by descriptions of facts, policy papers focus on analytical conclusions. Policy papers develop strategies and recommendations for action based unknown findings, which are generally described in more detail elsewhere. A policy paper is therefore a strategy paper.
  • Debate contribution: Established approaches are critically evaluated, and new approaches and concepts are presented, empirically and theoretically substantiated.

Submission Guidelines:

Abstracts should be no more than 350 words. Please include a title, your full name, affiliation, and contact information. The submission deadline is 30.03.2025. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 15.04.2025 and registration will be opened.

We look forward to your contributions and to fostering a meaningful dialogue on the future of sustainable urban and tourism development.
